Fall Camp and Celebrating 30 Years of FOCUS (You're Invited!)

This last weekend our UTA pastors took 140 students to Mount Lebanon Retreat Center for our annual fall camp. Students worshipped God, played games, were developed as leaders, grew in their devotion to Jesus, and connected in real friendship. Here's a picture of our group and a video of them worshiping together.

The one thing I'm finding that is so similar to last year is that when I'm asking young men how long have you been a Christian? So many of them respond with...
"Since this semester, a few weeks ago, when I met y'all!"

What that tells me is that young people are still yearning for God, all it takes is one invite, to come and know Jesus. And they're eager to say yes, because they know that what the world has so consistently disappointed them, or left them dry and empty. So much so, that when they encountered God's spirit, moving among God's people, they noticed the life and the difference available to them at work in the people around them. Praise God! The Harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Thank you for providing the opportunity for me to work in this harvest field. It really is plentiful. And just wait until you hear more about where their faith goes from here as they are invited, each one of them, to study the bible individually and grow in their knowledge of God.

And this is just one year of stories. Would you like to hear 30 years of stories of how God has been working in college campuses in DFW? Well good news! Have I got an upcoming event for you?

On Saturday October 24th at CityBridge Community Church in Plano, Texas from 2:00-4:30, we are going to be doing just that. Come reconnect with past alumni, or even if you never came through FOCUS come and hear testimony of how God has been at work on college campuses in DFW through this ministry for 30 years! Crazy to think I came in at the halfway point. But honestly, we may be at just the beginning. We will not only look back, and celebrate what God has done, but we will also expectantly look forward to the next 30 years and talk about where God may be leading us as a ministry and missions organization from here. It's going to be an incredibly exciting time and I hope to see you there. If that's not enough for you and you'd like to attend additional ministry celebrations because you're already coming into town anyways. All of our campuses will be hosting their own individual alumni reunions in the days leading up to the 30 year anniversary. I will be at the UT Arlington one, but you are welcome if you were an alumni on any of these campuses, and for clairty you're invited to the 30 year anniversary, whether you have ever been an alumni or not. Here's the info for the individual alumni nights.
And lastly, here's a current student testimony. Someone who your generosity is impacting today. Thank you for your partnership in this work. The impact is immense. There are 1000's of college students encountering Jesus every year because of you. The ramifications of that reality on our society will not be small. I'm so excited to see the firstfruits of that investment at our 30 year anniversary. I know God will amaze us all with his goodness and faithfulness through every generation.

Learning From the Wise

Dear Friends, Thank you for taking the time to read this ministry update. This winter season has been particularly encouraging and I am excited to tell you about what is coming up soon! The month of December began with a celebration. The school semester was coming to a close quickly so we threw our annual Focus Christmas party in the first week of the month. Talk about Christmas come early. The event was filled with sweet memories, worship, and funny skits put on by the various weekly core groups. Watching those skits is always a highlight of the year as everyone in the core often participates and everyone gets to see each others silly sides. A couple of guys at the UTA Focus Christmas Party. In the bottom picture, one of the roommates couldn't make the event so the rest of the guys thoughtfully chose to find a way to include him in the picture, no matter what.  Once the semester was over and the students went home for the holidays, I had a lot of time to read. Over the ...

The Laborers In The Harvest Field, A Baptism, and an Update to my Career Change in Ministry

There are 40,000 college students at UT Arlington. Historically, since I've been on this campus, each one of the 6 or so college ministries have maintained an average of around 100 members. That's at any given point, only 600 out of 40,000 college students on this campus consistently encountering the good news of Jesus. Obviously that doesn't account for the students who may not be involved in a college ministry but are rooted in a church, but it remains true, the percentage of students on this campus potentially not hearing about Jesus is undeniably sizable. And honestly, sometimes that really breaks my heart. I'm so grateful for the opportunity each of you have given me over the last 10 years to personally impact and share Jesus with as many of those students as I can, but I always have been and remain, only one person, with the same 24 hours a day that you have. Now God has continued to work in and through all that time and faithfulness, and I imagine that our gospe...

When Miracles Are Common and Pizza Theology

A student shared this at our most recent Thursday Night Fellowship and I thought it was so beautiful that I wanted to share it with you. "In Focus, Miracles are happening all the time. People are becoming saved, like I was a year ago, through this community, and equally miraculously people are becoming more like Jesus, like I'm still learning to do. But God is using this community to bring about those miracles. And I know that this all can feel common to us, especially those of us who have been around for a while, but if we are in a community where the miraculous is common , we should thank God for that community." That was shared by a student named Josh Krause who I have the pleasure of studying the bible with over the duration of this school year. I have been so encouraged by his willingness to keep learning about the grace of God and respond by living out of that reality. And I was doubly encouraged when he shared such a beautiful and praise filled sentiment with th...
